This year’s Chicago regional event will feature former Stanton Recognition recipient and well-known actor Joel de la Fuente ’87. Joel returns to campus on January 21 for a 90-minute award-winning performance of HOLD THESE TRUTHS, bringing 37 characters to life with only a script, a music stand, and the audience’s imagination. A Q&A with Jeanne and Joel will follow, moderated by Lisa Doi '09, who is a curator and project manager at the Japanese American National Museum.

Synopsis: During WWII in Seattle, University of Washington student Gordon Hirabayashi fights the US government’s orders to forcibly remove and incarcerate all people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast.  As he struggles to reconcile his country’s betrayal with his passionate belief in the US Constitution, Gordon begins a 50-year journey toward a greater understanding of America’s triumphs - and a confrontation with its failures.  A story filled with hope, this play will leave you cheering for a man who stood up for the true meaning of patriotism. In May 2012, Gordon Hirabayashi was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.

Dazzling, literary script… full of humor
The astounding performance that Joel de la Fuente delivers as Gordon Hirabayashi is reason enough to recommend Hold These Truths…with Jeanne Sakata at the helm, we are treated to a dazzling, literary script that’s full of humor.
