A 'Common' Thread: How a Student-Led Program Creates Connections Through Meaningful Dialogue

By Marina Bullock-Puzon ’26

I have been involved in the Commons Ambassadors (CA) program for two years, and it has been both meaningful and transformative. Last year, I co-led a session on social media and identity and this year, I’m leading a session on fast fashion and overconsumption. While the program is still growing and improving, I have seen firsthand the positive impact this student-led initiative has had on our school community.

The Commons Ambassadors program was rolled out in the fall of 2024 to strengthen the school’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion programming. Before CA, students often sat in classrooms listening to teacher-led lectures on contemporary issues, often focused on race. From my perspective as a student of color, this approach was not always effective or engaging. At times, it increased division and misunderstanding between white students and students of color, rather than encouraging meaningful dialogue.

Since the program began, I have noticed more students feeling motivated to discuss important social issues and taking steps to make a difference. The Commons model — a once-a-month, 40-minute meeting — allows students to choose the topics they want to explore and to lead discussions with their peers. I have found this approach far more engaging. When students guide learning, there is a unique energy and connection that encourages honest conversations, empathy and understanding in ways lectures often cannot. Students now feel more comfortable exploring diversity and learning from differences, helping to build a stronger sense of connection across our community.

Through my role as a Commons Ambassador, I have gained skills in leadership, facilitation and public speaking. I have also developed a deeper understanding of the issues we discuss, because teaching others requires approaching topics from different perspectives. Beyond my own growth, I have seen classmates benefit in meaningful ways. Many engage with topics they may have once found distant or difficult, leaving with new ideas, a willingness to ask questions and a greater appreciation for perspectives different from their own. I have watched students gain confidence, speak openly about complex issues and build stronger relationships with one another.

Looking back, I believe the Commons Ambassadors program demonstrates the power of peer-to-peer learning. Giving students the opportunity to lead and learn together creates an environment where understanding, empathy and meaningful dialogue can grow. I am proud to be part of a program that is not only changing how we talk about important issues, but also helping students connect and learn from one another.
