Science Olympiad: A Dynasty Worth Flying the W

By Lee Block, Science Olympiad Head Coach, Middle School Science Teacher

For 28 consecutive years, North Shore Country Day’s middle school Science Olympiad team has advanced to the state finals — a testament to the dedication, teamwork and passion that define this program. As I prepare to retire after 31 years at NSCD, I find myself reflecting on what has made this experience so special.

Science Olympiad brings together three things I love: science education, competition and collaboration. The program challenges students to think critically, solve problems creatively and work together in ways that extend far beyond the classroom. Seeing students push themselves, support each other and celebrate their achievements has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.

There have been many wonderful memories over the years. One that stands out is from 2017 when our team won first place in the entire region. When they announced the results, the students were so excited they all rushed the stage to claim the trophy. Moments like that capture the energy and camaraderie that make Science Olympiad such a meaningful experience.

Over the years, our success has been fueled by a strong science curriculum, dedicated students, and a remarkable group of volunteer coaches. When we first started, another teacher and I coached all 23 events ourselves. After a few years, it became clear that we needed more help. As the program grew, we were fortunate to have teachers, parents, alumni and even upper school students step up to help. Some of our former Olympians have returned as coaches simply because they still love being part of the program — a full-circle moment that speaks to its lasting impact.

Beyond medals and trophies, my greatest hope is that students look back on their time in Science Olympiad with pride — whether in the friendships they built, the thrill of competition or the skills that shaped their futures. Many alumni have pursued careers in science, inspired in part by their experiences on our team.

As this chapter comes to a close, I want to thank everyone who has been part of this journey — students, families, coaches and colleagues. A special thanks to former Head of School Julie Hall, who first introduced me to this incredible program in 1997. It has been an honor to coach, and I will always cherish the memories we’ve made together.
