Summer at NSCD: A Place to Learn, Play and Belong
By Cindy Hooper
Director of Summer Programs

From its earliest decades, North Shore Country Day’s Summer Programs have served as a natural extension of life on campus, offering students a place to learn, play and connect during the summer months. Over time, the program has grown into a set of distinct offerings shaped by the interests and developmental stages of different age groups. Today, Day Camp, Expedition Camps and Little Explorers Camp form the core of the summer experience at NSCD.

Day Camp, founded in 1949, has long been the heart of the program. Designed for elementary school-aged children, it reflects the school’s longstanding commitment to educating the whole child through a balance of movement, creativity and social connection. Campers spend their days in age-based groups, rotating through activities that include sports, arts and crafts, team-building challenges, traditional camp games and outdoor play. The program makes full use of the campus and, over the years, has expanded to include activities such as archery, tennis, rock climbing and boating. Throughout its evolution, Day Camp has remained grounded in the belief that time spent building friendships, developing skills and engaging in unstructured play is essential to childhood.

In the late 1990s, as interest in outdoor education and experiential learning grew, NSCD expanded its Summer Programs to include Expedition Camps for older students. These offerings introduced campers to more immersive experiences that emphasized independence, teamwork and confidence. Programs like Mariners, focused on boating and water skills, and Trailblazers, centered on land-based exploration and outdoor learning, combined on-campus preparation with off-campus excursions. Together, they offered students the chance to stretch themselves in new settings while remaining supported by familiar mentors and a strong culture of safety.

The addition of Little Explorers Camp in the early 2000s reflected a similar attention to developmental needs, this time for the school’s youngest campers. Designed for preschool-aged children, Little Explorers offers a gentle introduction to summer programming through play-based learning, predictable routines and guided exploration. The half-day format allows children to build comfort and confidence as they engage in creative projects, outdoor discovery and early social experiences in a nurturing environment.

Taken together, these three programs reflect how North Shore Country Day’s Summer Programs have grown and adapted over time while staying true to the school’s core values. Across generations, the summer months continue to offer students a sense of community, opportunities for exploration and the simple joy of learning beyond the academic year.
