Sixth grade math emphasizes computational skills that were addressed in Lower School and provides exposure to real-world problems that require strategy and analysis. Students are divided into three mixed-ability groups, and are given benchmark assessments at the beginning, middle and end of the year to measure their progress. Select students can be placed in 7th grade advanced math positioning them to take geometry in 8th grade.
Seventh grade math encourages students to be mathematical thinkers, prepares them for algebra and continues to evaluate their mathematical maturity. Students are placed in one of two groups: advanced math or standard math.  Both classes cover core algebra concepts, though more material is covered in advanced math, and the pace is faster. The focus in these classes is on building problem-solving skills through open inquiry and formative assessments. Emphasized technological skills include use of the calculator, spreadsheets. Students are given benchmark assessments at the beginning, middle and end of the year to measure their progress.

Eighth grade math consists of four different groups: foundations of algebra, algebra, algebra honors and geometry. In foundations of algebra, students continue to develop and strengthen their arithmetic and problem-solving skills while being introduced to skills needed to succeed in algebra. The focus is on building a graphic and symbolic understanding of linear and non-linear systems and problems.  In algebra, students learn real-world applications and further develop their problem-solving skills.  Students learn to use the TI-84 series graphing calculator, which supports student understanding of linear and quadratic functions. Honors algebra covers the same core concepts as algebra, however there is a much heavier emphasis on abstract problems and the pace is faster.
North Shore Country Day School is a junior kindergarten through 12th grade, college-preparatory school founded in Winnetka, Illinois in 1919.  With rigorous academic pursuit as the cornerstone, North Shore provides many opportunities for all students to excel – in the classroom and the laboratory, on the stage and the playing field, in their communities and beyond.
