Village of Winnekta Proclamation

North Shore Country Day School students, faculty and staff officially celebrated the School’s 100th birthday today during a very special Morning Ex, commemorating our very first day of school held on October 2, 1919. Students and Head of School Tom Flemma read the following proclamation from the Village of Winnetka naming Octobert 2, 2019 North Shore Country Day School Day.
WHEREAS, in the summer of 1918, 12 Winnetka families met to discuss the future of their children's education and the possibility of a new, independent school that would embrace the progressive ideals that were newly ascendant.

WHEREAS, in 1919, 31-year-old Perry Dunlap Smith was hired to start this school on a 16-acre campus at 310 Green Bay Road, purchased from the Girton School for Girls, using the progressive education and Country Day movements as models.

WHEREAS, on October 2, 1919, North Shore Country Day School opened for its first day of classes with students from kindergarten through 12th grade and a program focused on full participation in academics, arts, athletics, and service.

WHEREAS, many of Perry Dunlap Smith’s educational ideas still inform the way the School functions today, preparing students with a challenging education that requires them to think critically, communicate effectively and engage fully in their intellectual growth and personal development so they become self-confident, ethical citizens of the world who embody the School’s motto, "Live and Serve."

WHEREAS, North Shore Country Day School has educated thousands of students using these principles, nurturing them towards lives of service and consequence.

WHEREAS, North Shore Country Day School has been an important and proud part of the Village of Winnetka for 100 years.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Chris Rintz by the virtue of the authority vested in me as President of the Village of Winnetka, in the County of Cook, State of Illinois, do hereby proclaim October 2, 2019 as “North Shore Country Day School Day” in honor of its 100th Anniversary, and extend sincere congratulations to its trustees, faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and volunteers, past and present, for their accomplishments, commitment, and dedication to education, the Village of Winnetka, and its residents.
