Anita Rao ’21 and Niabelle Comeau ’23 joined more than 100 high school students from across the country in Iowa where they spent three days in January campaigning for presidential candidates in the lead-up to the Iowa Caucuses. The weekend was organized by the Mikva Challenge, an organization that helps young people get involved in the political process. “The Iowa trip exceeded my expectations in every way,” Niabelle said.
When they applied for the program, Anita and Niabelle had to rank their top four choices for campaign assignments. Anita and Niabelle were both matched with Elizabeth Warren’s campaign. They spent the first day making phone calls and canvassing the neighborhoods, knocking on doors and passing out campaign literature. Niabelle also attended a Joe Biden rally, while Anita attended a Warren event in collaboration with the NAACP.
“[Elizabeth Warren] took the time to speak to us individually after the event, answered questions and wished us luck on the rest of our weekend,” Anita said. “The chance to hear a candidate speak about her platform in an intimate environment and to personally communicate with her was fascinating.”
