University of Pennsylvania Independent School Teacher Residency Fellows Anticipated Openings in English, Life Sciences and/or Spanish

North Shore Country Day School, a vibrant JK-12 independent school near Chicago, is one of eleven independent day schools that have partnered with the University of Pennsylvania’s Independent School Teacher Residency (ISTR) program. The ISTR program, an exceptional opportunity for aspiring teachers, combines theory and practice for a two-year commitment after which Teaching Fellows will have gained invaluable teaching experience at North Shore and earned an M.S.Ed. from Penn.
For the 2019/20 Academic Year, we anticipate hiring two new Fellows and will consider candidates with strong academic backgrounds and interest in teaching English, biology/life science or Spanish for those roles.

The ISTR program runs concurrently with two years of teaching at North Shore and involves a week of work at Penn in each of two summers, online work with the entire cohort of fellows from the member schools, and one weekend a term studying with University of Pennsylvania faculty members at one of the partner schools. On campus, fellows work closely with a mentor at North Shore, teach two classes and co-teach a third with their mentor, and are engaged in all aspects of School life, including coaching as appropriate. Fellows may teach in one or both of our Middle and High School divisions.

If a candidate is offered a ISTR teaching fellowship position and accepts that offer, he or she must apply for acceptance into the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education with the support of the hiring school.

Information on the program can be found here:  https://istr.gse.upenn.edu/dstr/

A bachelor’s degree in the field the Fellow will teach is required. Experience teaching and/or leading young people is desirable. North Shore is eager to consider applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in independent school communities.

Candidates are asked to submit the following as separate documents to fellows@nscds.org
·   A cover letter specific to the role at North Shore Country Day School
·   a resume
·   a 1-2 page writing sample of the candidate’s choice
·   a listing of references (it is helpful to know the context in which the reference worked
with the candidate and have both email and phone contact information for each
reference).

North Shore offers Fellows a competitive salary, pays the bulk of the tuition and travel costs associated with the Penn program, and provides health benefits. We are fully committed to a culturally diverse faculty and student body.
