Athletics

Athletics has been an integral part of the Upper School program since the School was started in 1919. Perry Dunlap Smith, the founding headmaster, believed a school required its students to exercise both mind and body. Therefore, North Shore has always had a strong, varied athletic program. Participation in the interscholastic program is required from 9th through 11th grades.
All new students are required to play a team sport in the fall. This requirement has as much to do with athletics as it does with helping students have a successful transition into the Upper School.

After their first year, students are required to play at least one season of athletics through 11th grade to fulfill their athletic requirement.
