Since 1976, he has served as the Director of the Northwestern University Legal Clinic. In addition to these important roles, he is a Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Clinical Education. His major teaching fields are Legal Clinic, Juvenile Law, Trial Practice, Criminal Procedure and Legal Ethics.

In his role as Associate Dean for Clinical Education and Director of the Legal Clinic, Tom directs a program in which law students represent clients who would otherwise go without representation. In recent years, Tom and the Clinic have represented inmates in death penalty cases and have won a number of reversals where the convicted person was innocent Tom has also been a consultant on curriculum development for a law school in Ethiopia. In addition to his teaching, administrative and fundraising responsibilities, Tom maintains an active caseload at the Legal Clinic. concentrating on criminal juvenile defense, death-penalty appeals, and child-centered projects dealing with juvenile court reform and representation of children. Tom was a member of the faculty in two training programs, sponsored by the Federal Defender Program and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, for lawyers who represent condemned prisoners in state and federal post-conviction proceedings. These programs teach investigation, fact gathering and advocacy skills.

He is highly respected at Northwestern University and by the legal community. By North Shore Country Day School's assessment, Tom Geraghty has lead his life by the School's motto of Live and Serve.
